American iTalk starts by teaching the students all of the sounds in American English and how to recognize syllables in words and pronounce each one. Then they can pronounce the word (with out any or much accent).

They may not know what the word means but they can easily master that too and build a vocabulary.

This is oversimplified but the details are in the book.
